TapShop Guide to Shower Systems

Navigating the multiple options of shower controls and set-ups can be a complicated and daunting process. We have created the below step by step notes to guide you through the process.

Classic or Modern?

For a more period traditional look then go for the classic style often featuring cross-handle controls or ceramic levers.

For a modern or industrial look then go for the modern style featuring sleek lines and minimalist details.

Exposed or Concealed?

Exposed - shower valve, controls and pipework are all installed outside of the walls and fully visible. Often a focal point in a traditional bathroom setting.

Concealed - the shower valve and all pipework is recessed and hidden within the wall with only the shower controls and outlets on display. This gives a sleek minimalist finish in a modern bathroom.

Semi-exposed - increasingly popular in traditional settings the shower valve and controls and exposed but the pipework is hidden in the walls.

How many water outlets?

Depending on how many water outlets you want to supply will determine which control you need.

Showers will usually have one or two typically overhead shower and/ or handshower kit.

Baths may have one, two or three depending on whether there is separate controls for the bath and the shower or if there is one control for all outlets.

Single, dual or triple outlet?

Single outlet, single control – One control will operate both the flow and the temperature for one outlet typically either an overhead shower or hand shower.

Single outlet, dual control - Two separate controls for temperature and flow for one outlet typically either an overhead shower or hand shower.

Dual outlet, dual control - One control for both temperature and flow and a second control which diverts the water supply between the two outlets, such as an overhead rose and a handshower.

Dual outlet, three controls - The preferred option is a dual outlet valve with three controls. One control for the temperature and two separate controls controlling the flow for each of the two outlets. These can be used one at a time or simultaneously allowing you to use both the overhead and handshower at the same time.

Triple outlet, three controls - This is the most common triple outlet set up. Its main function is to enable in bath showering. One control for temperature, one control for the bath outlet (spout or exfil from overflow), and one control that diverts supply between the two shower outlets (overhead shower and handshower).
